The ancient 17th century Monasterio del Carmen was fully renovated and renamed as the 5-star, Hotel Spa Barceló Monasterio de Boltaña it is today. This outstanding landmark premises is embedded in the heart of the Aragonese county of Sobrarbe, where nature and history join to form the perfect scenario for our wedding. The wild and beautiful Aragonese river, the Ara, flows by the doors of the hotel.
In the middle of the 17th century, the monastery was built near an ancient shrine, by the Order of monks called Carmelitas Descalzos. The monks settled here in search of the riches of this river-valley; beauty, tranquility and a sunny micro-climate protected by neighboring mountains and hills, all of which gave Boltaña its name. Boltaña, in old Irish-Gaelic, means beautiful and peaceful place.
The convent and the church were built on the land originally occupied by the ancient so-called Holy Spirit chapel. The Baroque-style church’s dome and arches (cherished by Carmelitas Descalzos monks) is one of the best preserved of its kind today. The ancient cloister is situated in the center of the building. Its quadrangular shaped patio is surrounded by a domed gallery.
